S2 Splitting

Splitting of S2 is best heard at the LUSB to LMSB, and is usually not heard at the APEX. This is because P2 (the pulmonary closure component of S2) is usually softer than A2 and requires listening near the pulmonary valve to be audible.

S3 Gallop

S3 is best heard with the bell at the APEX to LLSB.  An intermittent S3 can be a normal finding in children and adolescents.
